Habo Heartlands - Johannesburg

Habonim’s large growth over the past several years can be attributed to the rise in popularity of Habonim in Johannesburg. The city, as the centre of the South African Jewish community, is the home of the movement's National Office. The large projects of the movement always see the largest turnout from Jo'burg, and today, over 500 children participate in Habonim in Jo'burg.

Activities are run on a regular basis for both Primary and High School children, starting from Grade three. From regular meetings at the Habonim Bayit, to weekends away in Mpumalanga, the Free State and surrounds, parents are able to make Habonim Dror a regular part of their child's Jewish life. Broad learning through the fun of informal education ensures that every Johannesburg channich develops a strong Jewish identity, a love for Israel and the ability to question and develop their own minds - all based on a strong and powerful value system.

The Jo'burg Mini-Machanot are renowned for their amazing fun, top madrichim and exciting educational content. With over 150 Habonim chevre in attendance, they're simply unbelievable!

For High School children, the focus turns to the movement and its ideals, as channichim prepare to become madrichim. Grade 8s and 9s are involved in seminars and weekends away throughout the year. Grade 10s begin a lengthy process towards Shorashim - the movement's three week tour to Israel - with seminars and other Habonim events. Weekly meetings occur after Shabbat Dinner on Friday nights which usually are educationally focussed. From Shomrim, chaverim begin a process to enter into the world of Bogrim and have numerous opportunities to be madrichim either on Mini-Machanot in Johannesburg or Durban.

Habonim is active in all the King David Schools as well as schools with a Jewish presence such as Crawford and Fairways.

The full time movement workers live and work at the Jo'burg Bayit. So pop in at any time!
