Cape Town

Habo Heartlands - The Ideological Centre

Cape Town is the vibrant centre of Habonim Dror in South Africa. Over many years, the most inspired leaders and core channichim have tended to emerge from South Africa's most beautiful city.

Habonim's world famous campsite, close to the hearts of so many thousands across the world, is situated only a few hours drive from Cape Town. Used often for Cape Town programmes during the year, the proximity of the campsite to Cape Town has made the Western Cape the movement's 'spiritual home'.

Activities are run on a regular basis for both Primary and Middle School children, starting from Grade three. From regular meetings at the Habonim Bayit, to weekends away in Cape Town and surrounds, Cape Town parents are able to make Habonim Dror a regular part of their child's Jewish life. Broad learning through the fun of informal education ensures that every Cape Town develops a strong Jewish identity, a love for Israel and the ability to question and develop their own minds - all based on a strong and powerful value system.

For High School children, the focus turns to the movement and its ideals, as channichim prepare to become madrichim. Grade 10s begin a lengthy process towards Shorashim - the movement's three week tour to Israel - with seminars and other Habonim events. Weekly meetings occur after Shabbat Dinner on Friday nights for Shomrim (Grade 11s) and Bogrim (Matric and up - the madrichim) which usually are educationally focussed. From Shomrim, chaverim begin a process to enter into the world of Bogrim and have numerous opportunities to be madrichim either on Mini-Machanot in Cape Town or in the Eastern Cape.

The Cape Town Mini-Machanot, on the campsite of course, are renowned for their massive numbers, top madrichim and exciting educational content. With close to 400 Habonim chevre in attendance, they're simply unbelievable!

The majority of past-Mazkirim and some of the movement's most outstanding minds have come from Cape Town. Habonim, continues to be the conscience of the community - creating critical thinkers who actively go out to create the change we talk regularly talk about in both Israel and South Africa.

If you come to Cape Town for a weekend make sure to pop into the Habonim Bayit for the time of your life!
