Habonim strongly believes that as skilled Jewish educators we have a large responsibility to the less fortunate in our country. Habonim partners with several orqanisations to ensure that we educate our channichim and ourselves on the value of being responsible for others and sharing one's time and resources.
Cape Town – Habonim partners with an organisation started in Cape Town by ex-Habonim members called Earth-Child. We work in many of their schools with the children and SRC’s developing their leadership and personal capacity for advancing their studies independently.
We also work with a group (also started by Ex-chaverim) called Equal Education that aims to decrease the gap between the rich and poor in terms of the quality of school education they receive. Habonim is currently helping them with their One Library, One school, One Librarian campaign.
Habonim has a strong relationship with Ons Plek and Nonceba Rape Crisis Centre in Khayelitsha.
Habonim is also closely involved with the T.A.C and endeavours to educate and raise awareness on the current HIV/AIDS crisis in the country. In addition it lends support to T.A.C Herzlia and helps mobilise the student body to T.A.C rallies during the year.
In addition, Habonim is in involved with Tikkun’s projects, tree planting for Lag Ba’omer in Delft and other projects on a more sporadic basis.
Johannesburg – Habonim is involved with several projects that Tikkun & the Chevrah Kadisha have initiated including fundraising through selling Livestrong bracelets, Purim and Pesach drives and lending manpower and valuable educators to projects run by Tikkun, that seek to improve the conditions in schools in Johannesburg.
Habonim also works with Equal Education in Johannesburg assisting in book collection and with their march to parliament.
Again in Johannesburg Habonim has strong ties with the T.A.C and seeks to get involved in as many of there political and social causes as possible.
The leadership of Habonim visit Soweto yearly and connect with several of the activist groups operating there.
