The Alec Rogoff Assist-A-Camper Appeal

In honour of the late Alec Rogoff, a highly respected Durban communal leader and long time chaver of Habonim Dror, we renamed our subsidy appeal the “Alec Rogoff Assist-A-Camper Appeal” in 2007. We wish to thank the Rogoff family and the Beare Foundation for their generous donations in supporting this fund, which has contributed significantly in assisting those children who cannot attend Habonim events during the year due to financial constraints.

In Habonim Dror's camping history of 80 years, we have always done our utmost never to turn away any Jewish child for financial reasons. However, the giving of subsidies unfortunately puts a severe strain on the movement's already limited financial resources. As the number of distressed families in our community continues to increase amidst the current economic climate, Habonim Dror is in serious danger of being unable to maintain this policy. Last machaneh, we subsidized over 25% of campers, and it seems clear that this year the number of subsidy requests will increase once again. We estimate that we will need to raise in excess of R350 000 in order for these children to participate in this unforgettable and fulfilling experience. Over many years, the kindness and generosity of members of the community, community organizations and the parents of other participants has ensured that we have raised the required amount needed to cover the financial shortfall.
