Habo Heartlands - Eastern Cape

Habonim Dror’s involvement in the cities of the Eastern Cape and nearby towns such as Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, King William’s Town and George, has seen steadily increasing numbers of chaverim from the Eastern Cape over the past few years.

While once the Eastern Cape was a movement stronghold, the decreasing number of Jewish families living in this part of the country slowly led to a decline in Habonim numbers from the region. However, a few years ago, the movement leadership made the conscious decision to develop a Ken (centre) in Port Elizabeth, which would draw channichim from all corners of South Africa's most rural province.

Every year more and more channichim from Port Elizabeth and East London discover the magic of Habonim’s Machaneh in Onrus. Having established strong connections with channichim and parents in the Eastern Cape, we have now set up more regular Habonim events in these areas. Currently, we run two Mini Machanot (weekend seminars) in Port Elizabeth during the course of the year, and attempt to bring as many Eastern Cape channichim to events in Durban, Cape Town and elsewhere.

Channichim from everywhere in the Eastern Cape come to all the movement’s national events including Winter Camp and Shorashim in July and our Hadrachah (leadership) Seminars in April.

The success of the Eastern Cape project has manifested itself in the producing of a number of superb young madrichim, all of whom enjoyed their first experience leading new channichim in 2009!

We are constantly looking to reach out to new channichim and develop a strong Habonim community in the Eastern Cape.
