Shnat Hachshara
What is Shnat?
Shnat is Habonim Dror’s ultimate Israel programme. It is an intensive 10 month experience that combines studying, mad fun, finding friends for life and begins a process of defining ones personal identity. It is a year that has proven to be fundamental in developing young people into future leaders. It is described by all as “the best year of my life”. Shnat currently contains 3 components – Machon/Boneh, Kibbutz and Kaveret
Who goes on Shnat?
Shnat is a post-matric programme, where people from across the globe converge in Israel for this once in a lifetime experience. Groups come from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, USA, Holland, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, and Argentina (just to name a few). Participants come from various youth movements, this includes Habonim Dror, Netzer, Betar, Bnei Akiva and 8 other movements from around the world.
Machon
The Machon is a world-renowned Institute for the training of young leaders from the Diaspora. The Machon as been running since 1946 and boasts a faculty containing some of the best teachers in there fields in Israel. The Machon offers an exciting and hands-on look into Israeli History and Current Society, Jewish Civilization, Hebrew, Leadership skills, Political Insights and lots more! Participants spend this time with about 100 people of the same age, from 8 different countries and 13 different youth movements.
Boneh
Boneh is an alternative option for those who do not enjoy the university style lectures of Machon. Boneh has a greater focus on Habonim and the kvutzah (group) and uses a more informal environment to focus on topics more specific to Habonim. Boneh is always hosted on a Kibbutz, where the participants live together and build a sense of group identity.
Kibbutz
After Machon several weeks are spent on a Habonim kibbutz, working in different jobs with the kibbutzniks, from cooking, gardening and laundry to working in the kindergarten and the fields. Participants enjoy free weekends and spend time getting to know the young people on the kibbutz and other volunteers. 9 hours of hard labour every day allow the Shnatties to enjoy the fruits of this Socialist living.
Kaveret
Kaveret combines practical communal living with community work in Israeli society. The Shnatties contribute invaluably to Israeli society whilst learning, compromising and having to fend for themselves (yes, that includes cooking; cleaning and shopping!) Increased freedom comes with increased responsibility and Kaveret gives participants an opportunity to explore the depths of Israel society while contributing to its betterment.
We have also added a new aspect to this part of shnat, namely Binah. While on kaveret they volunteer with different organisations, organised by Binah and also take part in Hebrew classes. By adding Binah to the program, we have aimed to continue the formal learning process that occurs while on shnat.
Acceptance and Funding
This is Habonim Dror’s most prestigious programme and therefore a selection process will be undertaken to ensure that the candidates sent are suitable. We reserve the right at any stage to reject candidates at any stage according to our discretion.
MASA is the Israeli organization which participants apply for a subsidy anywhere between $1000 - $10 000. The total cost of Shnat is approximately $14 500 (excluding flights)

The participants will be accompanied by security personnel when appropriate, provided with private transport and restricted from dangerous areas.
