Veida planner
From Habonim Dror
Veida is an Ideological conference called every 2 years to revise and give meaning to the chukka of Habonim Dror Southern Africa
Aim of Project
Veida needs to be the ideological rock of the movement. Ideology is essentially the core of why-we-do-what-we-do, the motives and reasons behind our actions. It doesn’t all have to be about “isms”, it incorporates the type of culture and atmosphere we feel reflects us and is needed, and it incorporates our dreams and goals for the individual and the movement. Essentially…it’s the most important thing ever.
In the Veida 2009 the aims were…
- To inspire, challenge and increase chaverim’s engagement with Ideology.
- To create a chukka (constitution), that serves as an accessible and relevant guide to HDSA’s ideology as well as a true reflection of HDSA’s unique identity, and in so doing empower the Shomrim and Bogrim.
- To create a more dynamic view of ideology and impassion the movement with incorporating it further in our movement.
- To be a constant reference and guide for the drive of movement Ideology until the next Veida.
In the Veida 2011 the aims were...
- To inspire, challenge and increase chaverim’s engagement with our ideology, and the general movement.
- To look at, and possibly rework aspects of the Veida document if need be.
- To create a more dynamic view of ideology and empassion the movement with incorporating it further in our movement, through action and not just words.
- The main aim of the veida was implementation; a chance for the bogrim to come up with practical ways of making sure that our ideology is inspiring, carried out and an active one.

Setting Dates
Veida has to be run in the Holiday period after December Machaneh. You need at least 5 days to run a proper Veida
The campsite is booked out often, so that's why you must finalize dates around June
When setting the dates you need to consider the following:
- Are you giving people enough time after Machaneh?
- When will people return from holidays?
- When does University and schools go back?
- Prices of flights.
Flights
choose these
Designing posters and flyers
Essentially, the launch of Veida happens at machaneh. So it is NB this is finished up by the time machaneh starts.
This isn't something that needs to be fancy and designed professionally. It's on the same level as a mini mach poster.
Include:
- Dates
- indicate that this is for Shomrim & Bogrim
- inspiring catchphrases
Analyzing the Chukka
Do this with your tzevet. Look at dividing sections of the chukkah amongst the tzevet and each member analyzes a section. Or base the analysis around your aims and keep it a group discussion and set aside a long meeting to look at and analyze the Chukkah.
Choosing a Rosh and a tzevet
The Tzevet is known as the Va'ad Veida and the Rosh must be one of the Mazkirim. It's good to have a combination of different ages as well as both men and women from the different kenim to fully represent the ideological thoughts and feelings of the movement.
The tzevet needs to be able to fulfil the following:
- Be able to engage with ideology on an intellectual and emotional level.
- To be attractive people and a dugma: They must inspire others to take part constructively in Veida.
- To represent different Bogrim age groups.
- Willing and able to graft with this project at the same time as Machaneh and keep stamina through till the end of January.
The structure of the Veida, the debates and voting shall take place according to methodologies decided by the Va’ad Veida. The Va’ad Veida can take decisions about the running of the Veida. The chairperson of the Va’ad Veida (Rosh Veida) has a casting vote.
Budget, Finance and Setting a price
Very important that this is done properly.
Use this template as a guide Veida Budget
Ensure that you budget for subsidies, Shlichim who don't pay etc.
Online Form
This can be simple and straight forward
Selection and group size
You need a significant group of the Bogrim to attend to make this succesfully. However, you don't want the group to be too large. You should aim to get about 50 to 60 Bogrim (including the tzevet and shlichim to the event) and then about 10 Bogrim 1's (only from Cape Town, as they are at school and will have to come late and it's too expensive to fly Joburg Bogrim down for 2 days.)
Campaigning
People have to come to Veida for the right reasons. They must care about Habo, want to have a say in the direction of the movement and have conviction to follow the chukka in the end.
Veida will be a success as long as it is attended by willing and positive people. in 2007, there was a mass exodus of people from Veida, as they were pushed to come, never wanted to really be there and all came on the condition that they could leave early- the result was disastrous.
A successful Veida turnout is anything above 50 people. The first step to getting this number is getting every single returning Shnattie on board. The outgoing Shnatties are the next step, the Hanhaggah should be a definite (The first function of the Hanhaggah is to give practical effect to the decisions of Veida…check your chukka).
Veida is also a very inspiring place for chaverim who have never felt like they are the core of the movement. So it's important to bring in a healthy number of fringe people.
Madrichim preparation
The tzevet should be well prepared. Ensure that you have your first meeting on camp to talk about aims and expectations (personal and tzevet)
Have another meeting straight after Veida to look at previous years Veidot, as well as look at the current chukkah in order to come up with a comprehensive list of aims and what you would like to achieve.
Then have meetings about the structure of veida and coming up with dayplans.
Keep everyone in the loop and constant report backs. Ensure that the peulot are well prepped, of a high level and done in advance. Make sure that the tzevet gets a chance to look at each peulah and have discussions about them, putting forward suggestions and critiques.
Food and ordering
Utilize the Dec Machaneh left overs. Buy from Checkers and take with you.
Putting together the Tochniet
This should be leveled at Bogrim 1's all the way to Bogrim 6's. Maybe look at running occassional seperate peulot for different shichavot so they are appropriate.
The peulot should be a recap on the ideology, looking at the aims of Veida and the structure of Veida, interested and related topics, and focusing on specific aspects of our ideology.
They will probably be a lot of discussion based methodology used, however try mix it up and ensure there is time for fun.
Atmosphere
combination of fun, educational, empowering, inspiring
Voting Sessions
Structure these in such a way that every proposal is given a substantial time to be spoken about and discussed, but that the conversations do not take too long. Look at giving people a time limit.
Ensure people are respectful! Set the tone from the start. Proposals should be put forward in advance and not allowed to be submitted last minute, in order to ensure that people have a chance to think about the proposal before hand.
Building the Chukka
This will take some time, however it must be ready soon after otherwise the hype of Veida is lost.
Make sure you publish it on the wiki and website, and advertise at all events. A nice idea is to print the Chukkah and write a personalized letter to the tzevet, so they each have a personalized copy. Also email out the pdf to the Hanaggah, Mazkirut of both kenim and the tzevet.
Incorporating the Chukka in the movement
An unending task
